Anyone know anything about claiming abandoned vehicles in California?

I found a VERY jargon-y article on the DMV’S website, and don’t think it was quite giving me the info I was looking for.

There’s a 5-speed Focus ZX3 sitting in the parking lot of my apartment complex. It’s tags expire in February, but by my count it hasn’t moved in like 4-6 months; like, not even opened or anything, there’s cobwebs in the wheels and the door handle has no “clean” spot where it would have been opened. Nobody in my complex knows who it belongs to.

So, would I call the DMV and ask? The Police? Does anyone have a plate check service subscription and want to get me the hookup? 5TWT070

Idk, but now I have a desire to claim an abandoned vehicle and adopt it. Not so much as a flip, but the way you’d adopt a doggo.

V90 is cool (though almost looks SUV-ish, like a new Outback), but looks like we will never get this:

I don’t know how California works, but some states have a process landowner’s liens for dealing vehicles abandoned on their properties. In NM, I think the process only applies to the person who actually owns the land, and not their tenants. Also in NM, that process leads to a lien for the landowner and ultimately a Sheriff’s auction to recover the costs of dealing with the car for the landowner. I don’t think they can end up the owner of the car unless they are the highest bidder on it. If Cali is similar, you might see if you can working something out with the landlord. Because these are usually long, drawn out processes, a car would usually have to some real value (and a lack of other lienholders) to make it worthwhile for the landowner. There are usually required attempts to notify the owner, public notices and then a public auction involved.

What might be more likely is to have your landlord tow the car, and then keep in touch with the towing company for when it comes up for auction for the unpaid towing and storage fees.

Is that not a V90? If it’s the V90 or the CC, I’m pretty sure we’re getting both

The ressurection of the C30/P1800ES that probably wouldn’t sell well enough to justify its existence but Volvo should make anyway because IT’S CALLED HAVING INTEGRITY, JEEZ

That’s the shooting brake concept that the V90 is based on. The concept has two less doors and is lower.

I totally missed the two doors thing, it’s rather obvious now. A shame indeed.

The good news? At the press conference they said that wagons make up like 40% of their volume, so it sounds like we’ll have attractive Volvo’s to look at for some time yet

The one in your pic is the V90 Cross Country though. We are getting the non-Cross Country V90 next year, which will be a little lower and less plastic clad.

Here’s a family pic, the two wagons don’t look much different, especially as the plastic on the cross country is close to body color, but the cross country definitely has more space at the top of the wheel well if nothing else.

I’m not sure , but I’ll ask a friend. I know of an abandoned classic Audi Quattro that’s been sitting for literally years and hasn’t moved. I know the process involves trying to find the original owners and trying to contact next of kin in case of death. We think the man who owned the Audi went on a business trip and died and his family didn’t know where he parked the car so it was just left to rot.

A friend of mine was a diesel mechanic. A truck had been abandoned at their facility after repairs were complete and paid for. There was something about the company which owned it going out of business, so there was nobody to come claim the truck. The repair facility where he worked didn’t charge storage fees, so the truck was put into a corner of the lot until someone decided to come get it.

A year later, his boss tells him to get rid of the truck. After some research, he calls another friend who is a tow operator. The tow guy comes and gets the truck. Now it’s on a lot where they charge storage fees. They attempt to contact the listed owner and then wait. After 30 days, they place a lien on the truck for unpaid storage fees. After 90 days, they sell the truck to my friend, complete with a new title.

In the end, he picked up a Freightliner with a sleeper cab and less than 200k miles for less than $1,000. Deal of the century.
